To give this list some context, a top tier first person shooter in the mid 90s took on average about a year and a half of development time to get from concept to retail shelves (well, mailboxes in Doom's case) and Duke Nukem Forever was originally intended for release in mid 1998 or earlier.

But it's hard to visualise exactly just how long FIFTEEN YEARS really is.
